Continental Tyres: BlackChili Technology

Road performance that’s not only dependable but rather Spicy!

Continental BlackChili takes advantage of the latest innovations in polymer and other material research. For the first step, refine proven natural rubber with special synthetic rubbers into a high-performance tread mixture. Next, the mixture is combined with special nanometric carbon soot particles. Finally, the surface and shape properties are optimised for the best use case of the tyre.

It’s all about how you mix it: At the Continental R&D labs in Korbach, Germany, engineers grappled with one of the fundamental problems of tyre construction. That is when you make improvements in one area, there’s a performance penalty in at least one other area. A compound which offers maximum levels of grip, for example, will wear out faster and roll slower.

The BlackChili compound instead takes advantage of the latest innovations in polymer, raw material, shape and surface research, combining the best elements of each to achieve unprecedented grip performance.

The science behind BlackChili is in constant development; with engineers adjusting the formulation of the compound to match the individual requirements of each new Continental tyres rolling out of the factory in Korbach. So while BlackChili may be technically different between two different tyre styles, you can trust that each has been indivdually designed for maximum performance in it’s specifically intended use case.

The compound technology is so sensitive and complex that BlackChili cannot be manufactured anywhere else in the world!
